The Odyssey of Hyrule
MORE ZELDA 64 IMPRESSIONS

Zelda: The Ocarina of Time has left its indelable mark on video game history. Some have praised it while others have critisized it. Isn't that just the way of great things. Anything that has been heralded as a milestone has undergone such scrutiny and so too has Zelda 64. Without a doubt as the Nintendo 64 fades into the mists of obsoletism the greatest game to be remembered from that system is Zelda 64. Others came very close, Goldeneye, Mario 64, Star Fox 64, but it was Zelda that will remain as a household name for many years to come. Why? - because it captivated the imaginations of millions and left them thirsting for more. This page is a continuation of your impressions of this trendsetting game.

Aaron Corkhum Pointed Out: Oddly, unlike those people who don't understand the true nature of the ending to Zelda 64, I loved it! It left everything come to and end, Link, as most people think, became a kid, and never remembered anything. Well, first off, this is wrong, how so?, simple, he remembered everything. Why do you think he went to see Zelda at the end?, simple, he didn't want to forget, he wanted to live on in a life he had already created. And if you look closely at his hand when he goes to see Zelda, it will still have the Triforce symbol of Courage on it. Hence, he remembered I mean if Link went to become a kid and forgot it would all repeat, but since he remembered, things would change. Over all though, the game kicked ass, but I was disappointed in one part, King Zora and Mido in the ending. I mean did they have to make that so sad, I mean they both lost the only people in their lives that they loved and cared about?!!, whats up with that?.

Gromlin Explained: I think Zelda: ocarina of time is a great game. I have complaints, of course, but it really is under-appreciated. My #1 complaint is the music. It sucks. There are a couple of cool tracks, like the hyrule field, (which is a slightly modified version of the old-school zelda theme) and gerudo valley. The Owl music... oh god.. that REALLY sucked.

I was regurgitating my lunch after hearing that. It is SO bad. #2 there needs to be more interaction between link and other characters. For example, Link hardly knows Zelda. No relationship occurs between them. No romance, no nothing. Totally buisness oriented. Save the princess, see the ending. Nothing. Also, it would be nice to be able to develop relationships with characters of your choice, like, when Zelda asks you all those questions, only more so. (I know id be shooting for Malon, who is basically Marin from Link's Awakening. She's a real cutie!) #3 more fights. Link needs to take more damge from hits, more enemies, some sort of place where unlimited sword combat occurs, sword fight-enemies should come back when you re-enter a dungeon. My fav enemy to fight is the "Dinalfos", the Deinonychus-Like monsters with rapiers. It's fun to fight them because I, searching for a style for myself, dont use a shield. (get eaten by a Like-Like and kill it, then get the shield back.Just dont re-equip it.) i like the way you can get the fly threads (I think that Link looks best with the blue tunic, master sword, and no shield w/ normal boots... but gold gauntlets look ok too.)#4 some sort of 4 player sword fighting game would be Hellah fun. like choosing between the bad guys(Lizalfos, stalfos, Dinalfos, Wolfos, Shadow link, ect.) and link with different equipment, and have a 4 player rumble. Now that would be fun.

Overall, I think the game was too easy, the ending was ok.. could have been better, but it was ok. I didnt like the way you couldnt play after you win and save, but.. has anyone tried the trick from Zelda 1 and named their guy "ZELDA"? It may give an extra hard mode. Id give it a try. It's really too bad that the faeries were so damn fugly. They look like bleeding trolls with too much makeup. This game has a LOT of ugly people in it. Like Impa, she's a little too masculine, and the Gerudo have been made to look especially unusual with their cruelly exxagerated features. i find the representation of middle- eastern people offensive. Zelda was WAY too feminine. She'd squeak like a mouse when you got hit, and used "pink-heart" power when she opens doors. Her voice is HIGHER when she is older.. she should have a more mature voice, not her helpless damsel voice. Hyrule field has a lot of wasted space. Several places where there is just blank field and no purpouse for it's palcement. they could have put another 3 dungeons in there. Geez. I REALLy hope Miyamoto- san decides to develop another Zelda game.. anyone know if he is? I heard he was finished with Zelda.. that scares the hell outta me. Zelda 64 is great, but it cant be the last one... it better not be!

Chris Morris Commented: I love your site, Video Gamer X! I felt like contributing to it, so please put this on the "Your Impressions" Page. I was talking with a friend about Ocarina of Time today. Our discussion turned to the things that we liked and disliked about the game. My likes of the game are the graphics, the hammer, Biggoron's Sword, and how Link was designed as an adult.

I had several dislikes about the game. They are that the game was to easy and too short, the storyline was kind of weak, the ending was even worse than the ending to Mario 64, Link cannot use the Boomerang as an adult, Deku Nuts, Ice Arrows, the Triforce is nowhere, and the bosses were all too easy.

My biggest problem was that the game was not medieval enough. There were not many medieval elements to the game, and the rest of the game was most certainly not medievil. A medieval fishing pole would most definately not be like Link's. No one really talked in a medieval way except for the Deku Tree. The Hook/Longshot does not belong in a medieval world. That was a little on the modern side. A bow would most likely not be used on a horse. A lance or mace would be much more likely.

I hated the ending because, Link has to go back to being a boring kid and from the way it ended, it seems that the !%@#%*& seven year adventure is doomed to repeat itself over and over because Zelda restored time to its original place.

Patrick Kerins Related: I'm a real critic when it comes to video games and i have A LOT to say about Zelda. First of all, I think that even if you haven't played the other Zeldas this one is still incredible. I also agree with you that there should be more subplots. Biggoron's sword and The Happy Mask Shop were both a plus, but what else? They could've added in a lot of other things as well to make the game more of a do this, this, this, and this. Instead of just trying to save Hyrule. Don't get me wrong, saving Hyrule is pretty big! Just, I like to see lots of other things in game. Also, people say how lame it is to only get 200r for getting all the Skulltula tokens and lifting the curse. I think that it is really just being proud of yourself for destroying the Gold Skulltullas and lifting the curse. Although I think that ther should be some sort of special scene when you do instead of "I'm free! Thank you for lifting the curse!" I also think that some of the Spiritual Stones or Sages should be collected out of the dungeons. It just sometimes gets boring going through cave after cave, passageway after passageway, dungeon after dungeon that you just want to go beat a game again rather than go into the next dungeon. Also, there should be more songs for the Ocarina. Only 13 songs, 7 of which I almost never use, and the game is called "The Legend of Zelda~the Ocarina of Time"? What is up with that? I often don't even have the ocarina on any of my C buttons. I also agree with you that there should be many more magic spells. There are three magic arrows, three magic spells, and the sword charge attack. That is seven attacks! And everyone knows you never you use fire arrows accept to light one of the torches in the house of Ganon! But I do dis agree that I often use Farore's Wind in Jabu-Jabu(Hey, Ruto's gone!) And in the water temple where I always have to change the water level. And especially in the fire temple where I always fall in the room where there is a ledge with recovery hearts and an eye you shoot to open the door to get the dungeon. I also think there should be more tunics or the tunics should be able to do more. Same goes for the boots. And when riding Epona more should go on. For instance, powered up arrows. And I don't like the ending either. Everyone always says how your the chosen one and the hero of time, and even the owl says that you will face many villains and fight many battles but don't be discouraged because it is your destiny. Then at the end Zelda says she is sorry for all the trouble she has caused you and says she will return you back to a child so you may live a normal life. I felt that if I had just destroyed the King of Evil, I'd be ready for any thing and woudn't be too happy about being normal again. I think Hyrule should be restored and you mary Zelda and get the triforce of power from Ganon and Zelda gives you the triforce of wisdom. Then, with the complete triforce you wish for the land of Hyrule to exist in happiness and pureness and prosperity and let its golden age go on for all time. And then you and Zelda live happily ever after in the land of Hyrule

Josh Lamented: I thought it was fun but I was a little bored with the repeated storyline. At times it seemed i was just playin a beefed up version of the old Zeldas. Don't get me wrong I'm glad i bought it and i recommend it to any one else but I wish they would have made a little more exciting story.

Jeremy Cohens Tells: Man what an awesome game! I have never played anything as great as this. There's so many places to visit and so much to do. It was kind of easy though in some parts, but other than that it was the best game I've ever played. There can be no doubt that this is the greatest game Nintendo ever made. Oh, and Video Gamer X you're site is amazin'. I have never seen anyting as good as it ever. Thanks for making us gamers happy.

Gary Commented: I have just beaten the game and like most of you have my share of criticisms and likes about the game. I liked the ending but it could of been better. One thing I would have liked would be for the castle to turn back to normal and having villagers go back to the market. I'd like to see those pesky corpses disappear. Another thing is they made Ganon way too easy. I beat his first form on the second try and his second form on the first try. I've never beaten a final boss on my first try before until now. Making a final boss that easy is ridiculous.

For those of you who wish you should use the slingshot, boomerang, and deck sticks as Adult Link you are insane. You replace them with better weapons anyway. The only reason you wouldn't be able to get all three spiritual stones as Adult Link (besides crawling through small passages) would be hitting the switch inside Jabu-Jabu with the transparent wall blocking the way.

Dark Link was way too easy. (On the first try I beat him only losing two hearts). It would be more exciting if he'd use Big Gorton's Sword, maybe occasionally use Din's Fire or even Nayru's Love. Then he'd be as hard as all of the other bosses, such as Volgavia. You can only hurt her while she has her head popping out of the rock and she's not too far off the ground.

My favorite level is the Spirit Temple because of the way I come back as an adult and finish it. I don't know why but it seems more serious then the other ones for some reason. Maybe because people in the level keep mentioning Ganondorf, the fact that the bosses talk, or maybe just because it was the last temple I beat. The background and the music put some kind of strange mood that was different then the other ones.

This is the best game I have ever played. The way I didn't get some of the items until later in the game made it a super challenge and the idea of having days change to nights are exceptional.

MarysiaAY Criticizes: This is my impression of Zelda 64. It was the first Zelda game I'd played, and I loved it! I did use a hint book sometimes, and A LOT in the Shadow Temple. I HATED it! "The Shadow Temple--Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred"? It really says that. I wanted to get through it as fast as I could. I think maybe you can get the Triforce, but I have no idea how. I think all the rumors circulating around are false. The ending was disappointing, but better than I thought. (someone told me that it was horrible). Zelda took the ocarina back, and somehow warped Link by playing Zelda's Lullaby. She got all his germs from the ocarina too. I feel sorry for Link--he lost ALL his friends. Saria, Ruto, Zelda and Darunia became sages. Dampe died. Malon didn't go anywhere, but she didn't seem to like him as an adult even though she recognized him. All his Kokiri friends didn't recognize him, and he was too stupid to tell them who he was. The Great Deku Tree died. The Zoras froze under the ice. Even Navi flew out the window in the end. It's so sad. Link had to go back to being a kid again, but his innocence was totally lost. Every day, he probably missed everyone. Poor Link...

Brendan Allsop Whimsically Relates: Zelda 64 is the best there is, was and will be in the standards of RPG/adventures. Man, sure, it wasn't the longest I've ever played, but it had the quality that I would have expected since Nintendo 64 said that they would make such a game. Though, I have seen in magazines, and Japanese Newspapers, articles on the Zelda we know in progress, and the screen shots I saw, were not on the game. Disappointing. Still, It's easy to get rigged up and addicted, cause man I was like, on this thing like some crazy drug. JACK DANIELS AND ZELDA MIX WELL!! I'll tell ya something else though, the ending, I agree with "Anonymous Says" about the ending. I wanna be able to go around Hyrule as an adult, and see the joy I put into everyone's hearts, Especially Malon, she looked hot for Link. Nevertheless, Zelda 64 is the best game I have ever played, and I sincerely hope in the future, that us Auzzies, get a chance to play the stuff we saw in reviews and other places on the net. Can't wait for Zelda 2 for the 64, should be some cool sh..!

Micheal Nicholas Broxterman Expresses: For one thing, I don't think Zelda quite lived to be the hype, you know, the game with all the revolutionary graphics, and the biggest game ever... but still, this IS the best game ever! And I'm really tired of hearing people complaining that the game is not medieval enough... in no way is it supposed to be!!! The game did not take place long long ago... it just took place in a different realm. If you have studied medieval times, then you'd understand the many differences. If the game was supposed to be medieval, then Link would probabley run around in studded chain mail with a helmet. But it's NOT supposed to be medieval! I wouldn't be able to stand hearing, "Merry meet, good traveler, Link! How art though doing on thine quest? Though hast yet many a challenges to overcome!" all the way through the game. It would annoy the $*&#^@% out of me! Besides, it wouldn't fit into the Jap version because they don't have symbols for Olde English. . . . Anyways, I am very happy with the game, but I don't understand one thing... if he goes back in time... then isn't Ganon just gonna' break all Hell loose again? I know he was cast into the Sacred Realm, but he wasn't 7 years ago! This makes no sense!!! Could somone pleeeaase make sense of this? And why isn't there a multi-player mode. WIth all the other Zelda games I thought it would be cool if they had a Bomber-Manish battle mode. Zelda would be so perfect for that, and the excellent targeting system was made for it! If there were a couple things I could change about it, though, here they are:

1. Make a WORLD. You know in some game like dragon quest or something, the Christopher Columbus thing applies...If you go too far you appear at the other end! I would also make it so that you can travel around the world to about two or three other countries. There would be little mini-quests there, but nothing major or very contributive to the story line, just a little extra thing...

2.Make the overall of Hyrule bigger. When Zelda was in it's pre-release stage, I daydreamed about Zelda a lot. I imagined a scene of him coming to a peak of a short mountain with a tall mountain on both sides... in the distance, more mountains, inbetween? A town! Yes, I expected the villages to be much bigger, Market was rushed. I would make Hyrule about 40 min to walk from one end to the next, but with plenty of stuff embetween to keep the pace steady, I hated passing up minutes in Hyrule field, going somewhere with nothing to do or see on the way.

3.More weapons/spells. A lot of the weapons were nice, but I'd like to see more swords and spells. Maybe even some maces or flails...

4.More interaction with characters. Everyone else has said this, too, so I'm not even going to bother.

5.Multiple endings. Self-Explanitory (Maybe Link could choose from one of the... let's see... Malon, Ruto, Nabooru, Zelda, Saria... OK, 5, five women who like him and get a different last level and ending! Malon=Link decides to retire as the Hero of Time and let new adventurer and heroes be born.

Ruto=UNFREEZE ZORA'S DOMAIN AS LAST LEVEL!!! You save all of the Zoras. Then you become their King as King Zora unfortunately passes away... Nabooru=A REAL desert area and a big desert templein which Link meets with Ganondorf, who is not only enraged at Link for having the Triforce he wants, but for trying to replace him and turn the Gerudos back to good thieves!!! Link spends the rest of his life serving the poor. Saria=Link finds an item as an adult that he can only use as a kid. He must go back to s kid and use the item to uncover a dream temple. There he fights a "nightmare". In the end he is awoken by Saria who says that he was talking in his sleep and woke everyone. Then they go off and play and Link still doesn't have a fairy.

Zelda=Zelda gives Link her Triforce of wisdom in order to help him retrieve the Triforce of Power from Ganon. Same as really in the game, onlythey take the Triforce of Power from Ganon THEN lock him up. Link must then travel to the Light Temple to put the Triforce in it's resting place, but since the Light Temple and Ganon are both in the Sacred Realm, and the Sacred Realm is a reflection of one's heart, is the Evil Realm and Link must fight through it until he arrives at the Light Temple, which is very short, and is about to put it to rest when Ganon pops up, who was been waiting greedily for the Triforce. Ganon fights Link again, only much harder, and in a flying dragon-griffen form. This time Link kills him (supposively) and the Triforce is set in it's final resting place.

None=Same as actual game)
Well, that's how I'd have it!

Ian Wudarski Raves: Zelda by far is the best game in the world! I have every single Zelda game and have to say this one has one of the best story lines ever in a game. My deepest sorry the the girl about the Light Temple! No one can forge a story or pictures like that it's to in depth! Just like John Salvo I sulute you Miyamoto!!!!!!!! I can't wait for the sequal. Also the thrill of the second boss, Ganon, I thought i was in the clear and then that noise, man, you don't get a feeling like that in Revenge!!!!!

IceBrakr Says: WOW. What else can you say. I was addicted to the game the second I got it. It was worth every minute. Sure the ending could have been better. C'mon. Everyone singing and dancing. Still though I give this game a 10. There's also nothin like going back to play it hopin to find some new and cool secret. Well, I'll sum it all up into two words. GOOD JOB.

John Mac Recounted: I loved this game....It was the best game I have ever played and I probably will ever play. My favorite temple had to be Water temple. The day I beat Water Temple, I played the nintendo for seven hours strait. After playing, I could her the Water Temple theme in my head, playing continuosly in my head and every time I closed my eyes, all i saw was Link sinking to the bottom of the level with his Iron boots. The only thing that brought me back to reality was a cold shower and felling how hot the top of my nintendo was......after that day/night/and back to day I knew i was then a true Video Gamer...I've never felt the same since my thumbs have stopped bleeding.

Lilmango Tells: I don't understand why no one liked the ending. It really touched me. When you think about it it's really sad. You have Link who started out as just a little Kokiri without a fairy. He had no one, he was alone in life, but he was destined to be a hero. THE hero. He becomes the Legendary Hero of Time and learns, fights and matures. He gains what everyone wants: power, respect, and (possibly) love. Then in an instant it's all taken away, where he becomes a little kid again...everything he had is gone. He's back where he started, with no one. Even less now that Saria is gone...but somehow more because of Zelda and his experiences. I didn't really convey what I wanted to say, but it's the best i can do right now. Think about it, it's actually a great ending.

Zelda Dude Wrote: Hey dude. I totally the loved this game. The graphics are surreal, the gameplay is totally immersive, and the Z-targeting system was a stroke of genius. My mouth hit the ground when I saw the massive Ganon peering down at me. But, there is only 2 drawbacks. Of course, the lack of the triforce and the absolutely idiotic ending. I felt like I got totally screwed out of 60 bucks when I saw Zelda take the Ocarina of Time and sent me back to my kid form. Miamoyato should have had Link get the triforce and become king and talked to all the people of Hyrule for a last time. Sorry if I can't shut up. I'm still looking for that god d--- triforce though. If u have any updates on the triforce front, please inform me. Hopefully I stumble upon it on one of my explorations of Hyrule. Later dude.

TAConan Lets Us Know That: Don't get me wrong here, I enjoyed playing Zelda64 and everything, but I don't think at all that the game deserves to be praised so much and honored as the best game of all time. The main reason I disliked the game was probably the difficulty of the game. I mean come on, how hard is it to figure out to bomb a wall with a huge indentation and a flourescent color on it? They should have made the dungeons much harder. Like in the other Zeldas where if you run out of an item, you have to go back to a villiage and go buy some more. The rupees were way to easy to get, AND they shouldn't have made it that you can get really expensive items without buying it (Fish, Blue Fire, Bug etc.). Epona was a huge bummer, I mean why can you only use arrows while on her? You should have been able to use all the items ( I have the version of Zelda without swordless link). There weren't enough magic spells, when they say that whoever adds his/her power to yours, you should get a spell with it or something. Ganon's Castle was way too easy. You should've had to fight all the bosses and mini-bosses over. There weren't enough real sword-fighting battles, I actually have an extra file saved right up to the part where you fight Dark Link because I found that battle really fun to do over and over. There should have been a multiplayer to it that two people could fight each other that would've been awesome! And, Ganon really was probably the easiest boss in the game (besides Queen Gohma)! THE ENDING SUCKED! Sending Link back in time? That's so stupid! He didn't even get any play from Zelda! The only hope that this game can be better than I think it is, is if the Triforce really exists. If that ever happens I'll eat my words. Otherwise I think Zelda is just as good as any other game. And you guys think this game is better than Goldeneye? Dream On..

IceBreakr Praises: WOW. GOOD JOB.

Denise Gray Says: i was dissapointed with the ending, i had hoped that there would be more to game as all gamers do, instead princess zelda takes the ocarina back, you dont get a choice here! and away you go back in time, like it never happened, the second time at the end of the game the only difference that i saw was that since i was able to snag the fishing guys hat, he didn't have it in the ending when he was"line dancing"with other characters, i did enjoy the light show of the goddesses streaking across the sky, and the shot of epona galloping across the field was good. the first time i had forgotten all about the guy on the rug in the desert, and pondered about who he was and why i had missed him,i actually thought he looked more like a witch doctor inthe end and vowed to find this strange character the next time through, you can imagine my dissapointment when i began my journry through the desert for the second time.

Liz Comments: I thought the game was excellent. It had wonderful graphics, and brought out the unpredictiabilty that we all love in games. Although, i am slightly dissapointed in the ending....leaves room for a sequel though.....

Dodge8282 Tells: i think that zelda was a great game. but comparing it to my other favorite game, goldeneye, i think that there should be different levels of difficulty. like after you beat it for the first time, then it will let you play the game with a higher difficulty, for example, the enemies will be harder, take off more damage, shorter racing times, ect. and everytime you beat it then you can go to the next difficulty level.
