Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld
Year: 2013
Synopsis: A young girl gets transported into her game console and becomes a hero.
EMN Notes: This is so cute! It's a fun little bite-sized isekai produced by DC, as it was based on their comics of the same name. The video game twist is a fun way to update the property and each episode is light and breezy and fun. It's nice to have some fantasy shorts - I just wish there were more!
Buck Rogers (Film Serials)
Year: 1939
Synopsis: Following an accident, an astronaut gets transported to the 25th century.
EMN Notes: The sci-fi hero that started it all, Buck Rogers! These are fun - I have a lot of appreciation for old film serials and animated shorts, and they often make for great lead-ins to movies or longer TV shows. There's something charming about the old film footage and how they made do, making wondrous sci-fi on a shoestring budget.
Captain Yajima
Year: 2021
Synopsis: A sci-fi adventure by Worthikids that combines the fun of 70s anime sci-fi shorts with a stop-motion-esque style.
EMN Notes: This is such a cool little animation. It's commendable how dedicated to capturing the Rankin-Bass-esque art style Worthikids is. Despite the fact that it's all in CG, you wouldn't know it by watching as the dedication to making the art style feel correct is replicated perfectly down to the nearly-invisible wires during flight scenes. So cool, and so impressive.
Chargeman Ken
Year: 1974
Synopsis: In the year 2074, a child suits up as a hero to fight aliens hidden in our society.
EMN Notes: This show is an unmitigated disaster and an absolutely hilarious one at that. It's a series of five minute anime shorts with extremely limited animation, a transformation sequence that gets used in every episode and never changes, questionable morals, and an annoyingly-catchy theme tune. Half of the episodes end with Chargeman Ken just killing some people for no apparent reason but it's always fine because they're aliens. It's nonsense, terribly-paced nonsense, and it cracks me up. What a good time.
Cinemassacre Sci-Fi Reviews
Year: 2008
Synopsis: A series of exclusive reviews by James Rolfe for Spike.com.
EMN Notes: Apparently, during a period where Spike really wanted people to check out their website, they brought in James Rolfe to do what is essentially his Monster Madness reviews but for sci-fi and cult movies. He didn't produce very many, but they're all pretty much what you'd expect from him - solid, funny synopses and relaxed reviews about films he likes. Sometimes I swear EMN is just a James Rolfe propaganda vehicle, but we can't help it - we like him!
Code MENT
Year: 2009
Synopsis: An "abridged series" of Code Geass featuring a lot of yelling.
EMN Notes: This kind of ended up on here by accident after Mandy and I discussed adding abridged series'. We went through a few as an idea and I added Code MENT because of the Soup Store clip, which is still extremely funny. In fact, a lot of it is extremely funny. There's plenty that hasn't aged well, because, well, it's an abridged series from that time period, but there's enough humor here to make it work. It provides something totally different, too, and I appreciate that.
Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century
Year: 1953
Synopsis: An intergalactic space duck takes on the Martian Menace.
EMN Notes: I love Duck Dodgers, and the original short is still so delightfully funny and fun. I somehow never put together the Buck Rogers/Duck Dodgers connection until recently, as silly as that is, but now that I'm familiar with both I love it. It helps that Daffy and Marvin are two of my favorite Looney Tunes. It's also neat to know that George Lucas liked this short so much he asked for it to be played before the original theatrical release of Star Wars. Good stuff.
FTL Newsfeed
Year: 2142
Synopsis: News broadcasts from the future shown to us in 30-second snippets.
EMN Notes: Okay, what this really is is a micro-series from the Sci-Fi Channel that ran from 1992-1996. It's very Futurama-esque in that it uses modern issues and puts a coat of sci-fi paint on them. Sometimes they age well, sometimes they definitely don't, but I love how weird this whole idea was. It's sometimes quite funny, pleasantly low-budget, and makes me smile. It really helps with the atmosphere on this channel, too!
Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe
Year: 1940
Synopsis: An epic space opera serial based on the comic strip of the same name.
EMN Notes: Another wonderful film serial, and the third in the Flash Gordon film serial series. It's still so great to see some really classic sci-fi on this channel. The original Flash Gordon serial was actually intended for adults rather than children and was meant to get adults back into sci-fi. It apparently worked, and good for it!
Mystery Science Theater 3000
Year: 1988-2018
Synopsis: In the not-too-distant future on a station up in space, some scientists show bad movies to members of the human race.
EMN Notes: You know the drill by now. We love MST3K. It is literally a series set in space and the selection we've grabbed is all about science fiction and fantasy. There are some really classic episodes here, including new classics featuring Jonah. It's all so fun, so relaxing, and so funny. You can't go wrong with MST3K and it was one of the driving programs behind this channel.
Omega Mart
Year: 2021
Synopsis: Come to Omega Mart for all your household needs! You have no idea what's in store for you!
EMN Notes: Omega Mart is an absolutely brilliant surreal sci-fi interactive art piece that takes the form of a seemingly-normal grocery store. The ads are hilarious because they're so perfectly evocative of classic 80s ads or even modern hardware store ads like Menards, and the slogan is SO funny to me. The ads are so great on this channel because they fit the atmosphere perfectly and so much has been done to make them feel legitimately of-the-time. They're a little unnerving, but not really horror, mostly humorously strange. The actual contemporary art gallery they're seemingly advertising is SUPER cool, too! I hope I get to go one day.
Sci-Fi Channel Bumpers
Year: 1996
Synopsis: Classic Sci-Fi Channel ads, bumpers, and previews of upcoming programs.
EMN Notes: The Sci-Fi Channel always had such weird little bumpers that were full of imagination and made absolutely everything they were advertising seem like the coolest thing in the world. I especially love their anime ads, and I'd argue that Sci-Fi was just as instrumental as Toonami in showing the world the power of anime, just for a totally different demographic. There's something about the old Sci-Fi Channel branding that made you feel like you were part of something underground and cool, something futuristic and fun. I love the vibes here.
Star Wars: Clone Wars
Year: 2003
Synopsis: A series of animated shorts that bridged the gap between Star Wars movies Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith.
EMN Notes: These are honestly so, so cool. I have a conflicted relationship with a lot of Star Wars media, but Genndy Tartakovsky worked his magic here with little bite-sized adventures packed with exciting characters and setpieces. It's amazing what he was able to fit within less than five minutes. I always get excited when one of these pops up on the rotation; it reminds me a lot of film serials of old and they always make for a great introduction to whatever is about to come next.
